How to find the updates of registered / approved drugs ?

As pharmaceutical / medical supplies wholesale distributor we face this question a lot.

Health Canada is the drug regulator agancy in Canada. Health Canada has transparent free online access for all pharmaceutical products (drug database) (generic drugs or brand) that have been registered, formant or canceled in Canada anytime. The website is simple, easy to use and user friendly.

Steps:

Go to https://health-products.canada.ca/dpd-bdpp/index-eng.jsp , it will take you to the Health Canada government website for Drug Product Database online query.

  1. Select “Approved”.

  2. Go to input name (Active ingredients(s):) and type in the name of the active ingredient of the product that you are looking for.

—> If you are confident with the brand name you can put that under (Product Name:) and if want to refine your search with the manufacturer name you can do that too. I like to leave everything open so I can see all the options available in Canada.

  3. Click “Search”.

Note: Be careful you are not mixing up active ingredient names with other names for the product like brand name or other common names (brand name may vary from country to country). To ensure you have the right active ingredient name you can do a quick Google search. Don’t include any number symbols or acronyms. For example, I am looking for Advil but I see underneath the name of the product in the box Ibuprofen. After Google searching both, I found that Ibuprofen is the active ingredient name.

The Results:

By sorting them for easier counting, I found the following:

  • 36 approved medications in the Canadian market that contain ibuprofen

  • 23 approved medications in the Canadian market that contain Ibuprofen with the strength 200mg

  • 7 approved medications in the Canadian market that are under the name “Advil”

  • 3 approved medications in the Canadian market that are under the name “Advil” with the strength 200mg

The code:

The Drug Identification Number (DIN) or Natural Product Number (NPN) is used by health care professionals (Pharmacists, Doctors, Pharmaceutical Wholesale Distributors, etc.) to better define the drug quicker and more accurately.

Now you know the most updated status of your medication search in Canada. You can send us this code to find the price and availability for your medication.
